Hip replacement exercises are the most important steps on your road to recovery. If you’ve recently undergone a hip replacement surgery, then you can use these basic and low impact exercises to aid in your hip replacement rehabilitation.

While it is important to keep in mind a full body workout, start with these introductory physical training methods and work your way up as you feel more comfortable and confident in your recovery.

Early Hip Replacement Post-Op Exercises

Soon after your surgery you can begin to use these exercises to increase strength and mobility.

Ankle Flex

Slowly flex your foot toward your knee then back away from your body. Do this as many times as you can every 5-10 minutes. You can use this exercise immediately after your surgery.

Ankle Rotation

Rotate your foot several times in both directions up to 5 times. Use this exercise 4-5 times daily.

Leg Abduction Exercise

Slide the leg out and away to the side of your body as far as you are comfortable. Then slide your leg back and touch your feet together. Repeat 10 times. Practice this 3 or 4 times a day.

Standing Hip Recovery Exercises

As you become more stable and balanced in your recovery, practice these basic standing exercises to help speed up your mobility.

Standing Leg Raises

Lift your leg, bending it at the knee. Do not raise your knee above your waist. Stand in this position for 5-10 seconds. Slowly relax your leg back down. Support yourself by holding onto something (a chair) for stability. Do this exercise 10 times, 5 times a day.

Hip Extender

While supporting yourself with a chair, lift and extend your leg out behind you slowly. Keep your back as straight as you can. Hold for 4 seconds. Repeat about 10 times 4 times a day.

Standing Leg Abduction

Again, be certain to keep yourself supported with a chair, table, or any other stable, convenient object.

While standing, slowly lift your leg out to the side as far as you can. Keep your foot pointing straight. Keep your knees and back straight as well.

Slowly return your foot to the floor. Do about 10 reps 5 times a day.

Mobile Hip Exercises

Regaining mobility and muscle strength training is the most important part of these exercises.

Walking with Walker, Cane, or Crutch

The first few weeks you will want to move about as much as you can with a walker, cane, or crutch to help you support your weight. Once you can stand on your own, you are ready to move from the walker to the cane/crutch.

Support your weight with the cane in the opposite side of your body that was operated on. Left hip replacement = cane in right hand, and vice versa.

Climbing Stairs after Hip Replacement Surgery

Stair climbing is an excellent exercise to increase strength and endurance in your leg muscles.

Remember, as you climb stairs to lead with your best leg, and as you descend stairs you should lead with your operated leg.

Use an Exercise Bike

Exercise bikes are not only great cardio, but they’re perfect for increasing flexibility in the legs and hips. Start on the lowest difficulty resistance and slowly work your way up as you recover.

Full Body Workouts

Full body workouts and cardio are important, as well, for a speedy hip replacement recovery. Building up a strong core is key for balance. Maintaining a nimble, durable, and flexible body is important for both mental and physical health.

So keep that body as healthy as you can, because having a healthy body and mind is essential in reaching your maximum potential.
